White Album’s first episode is very impressive.
I had no expectations on White Album going into it but the OP convinced me I wasn’t looking at something cheap like Akikan. The images and animation is very crisp and pretty at 720p, the music is polished without being too exuberant. Great first impression.
What came after the OP was great too. The characters seem real and deep. I love the way Touya’s thoughts appear on screen when he can’t express himself to Yuki. You can feel your stomach twisting when the man just can’t place a word when you know he has a lot to say.
Another thing that struck me is how Haruka was presented. They developped her character so quickly and it still isn’t perfectly defined. They referenced her past personality and her development up to to now but also potential degeneration. It’s also up in the air how bad it is. They set up a nice side-path to follow.
The best thing about it is how old the characters are, they all seem to be university students so we’ll hopefully be dealing with a mature story with quality drama that won’t fall into the idiosyncrasies of teenage ecchi dorama. We also had a scene centered around literature, poems of Robert Browning’s. Isn’t that nice? I hope there’s a philosophy reading character hidden somewhere because my knowledge of poetry is pedestrian at best.
I hope that, by season’s end, we’ll be able to place White Album right up there with Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien and True Tears.

“I hope that, by season’s end, we’ll be able to place White Album right up there with Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien and True Tears.”
That isn’t saying much you know…
Those are the nec plus ultra of dramas I’ll have you know.
jp, I strongly recommend you alter your playback setup, otherwise you won’t be able to properly display the insert karaoke and Touya’s “thoughts”. For reference, download the xvid release and compare – this is how it’s supposed to look like.
I recommend CCCP:

I do have the CCCP installed, are you just advertising the CCCP or what is it that makes you think I can’t see things properly?
