Tytania and Philosophy.

I watched Tytania episode 7 (I think) and that zheng-long guy I think he’s named. They were all like “OMG, he has a doctorate in Philosophy!” That felt really odd to me. First, he talked in entirely unphilosophical terms, second, the Philosophy PhD is usually looked down upon in general society. It’s even more odd coming from a band of pirates.
I wouldn’t mind living in a world where a Philosophy doctorate meant you were considered wise or even remotely useful and worth listening to. Being a philosophy student and all. The truth in our 21st century western world is that philosophy as an academic discipline is limited to the universities and colleges. It’s almost a sort of occult art. Sad really.

Er, I know philosophy students and unless they talk about philosophy, they usually talk in entirely unphilosophical terms; also, where I live philosophy phds are not looked down upon at all. A degree in philosophy might be considered worthless by many people, but a phd commands at least some respect.
Well he was talking about philosophy, kinda.
He was drawing a conclusion from the pirate leader’s attitude. That made my eyes roll. It was such a platitude, shameful for us philosophicals.
I’ve met philosophy students. Can’t really say i’m impressed. A PhD is something to be universally respected, no matter what – any holder of a PhD is one of the worlds leading experts in their particular field, and has a huge amount of dedication – but putting such effort into what amounts to word play seems useless to me.
Philosophy amounts to word-play?
Didn’t Wittgenstein say that it’s all a matter of language games, or something? I’m not an expert. But if Philosophy does boil down to word-play then someone with a Philosophy PhD looks even cleverer: they’ve chosen a qualification in a subject where people might pay you to teach word-play. Sounds like an intelligent career move to me.
