Probably the best anime I’ve treated myself with after weeks of hard work. Artland’s new space opera brings all the classic elements we have come to know and love in epic storytelling and gives it a flair much akin to the Legend of Galactic Heroes.

Tytania is based on a series of novels first published in 1988, with the third and current novel being released in 1991. While this may seem like an unusually long gap that suggests discontinuation, the series as it officially stands is still to be completed. The premise of this epic revolves around the seemingly ruthless clan Tytania. As the name implies, these guys are powerful and control most of explored and colonized space. So powerful in fact that the emperor they swear allegiance to is a mere puppet to them.

The show gets straight to the point with it’s position as a space opera with an operatic opening theme and orchestral soundtrack typical of such shows, paying tribute to its predecessors. As expected of great anime we are placed right into a battle after the opening song is over. Here we are introduced to the first of a few who go by the name Tytania – Ariabart.

The show also doesn’t fail to deliver on the front of having your required dose of aristocratic style we’ve come to expect from the genre.  Like the recent Code Geass, the show has its lords, dukes, kings and an Emperor. Granted this emperor is a bit of a pussy.

Tytania overall has decent animation – it falls short of shows such as Ghost in the Shell and Samurai 7. However, the political drama and large-scale battles will be sure to more than make up for it. I really look forward to seeing more of this show and hope the rest of it will live up to the expectations set after seeing this first episode.
