Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto: Natsu no Sora- 03

First assignment.
This episode started with very cool over stylized surfing scenes and then it went into breakfast mode. Fortunately it looks like HAL won’t put Midorikawa into stereotypical “lonely, angry outsider” cliche. Sure, he’s not the most friendly guy around, but we already see him smile, share his passions for surfing as well as display his fears and anxieties. It turns out he only recently learned that he’s a mage, so he has no training, no experience and actually has yet to perform any kind of magic. No wonder he’s insecure when surrounded by brats like Sora who can stop truck mid air
The sensei owns!
He calls the strict old lady by “-chan”, he wipes his mouth into his pijama and…
And he sure picked a hot girl for his secretary.
Yeah, he owns hard alright
This time Sora took on her first official assignment
It was a request by old widow to open a safe. It was a request she repeated every single year. She didn’t have the key, but after looking at what’s inside she still put it all back in place, closed the safe and waited another year till she made another request identical to the last one. The theme of not being able to let go of lost loved one isn’t anything new and Summer Sora didn’t try to reinvent the wheel here. But what was there was very well done. The widow behaved like a real human, not just one dimensional “symbol” of sadness. Sora actually took a stand and didn’t follow her sensei completely, instead twisting her actions a little, enough to make a real difference for this woman. What’s more the episode didn’t end up with ideal solution to widow’s problems, Sora definitely changed her for the better, but it’s obvious it’s merely the beginning of her road. So far this series has a very realistic psychology of characters, which I find very refreshing and enjoyable to watch.
Overall another satisfying episode, the show is moving slow, but oozes with great atmosphere and so far is exactly what every slice of life series should be, all this enhanced by great character writing and still incredibly pretty visuals. The characters are really growing on me, from Sora, who’s turning out to be surprisingly multidimensional, through her awesome teacher and ending with Midorikawa, who surprisingly with few little motions in this episode made me very sympathetic to his character.
