Code Geass R2 21, the best episode of the second season.
Oh the Philosophy! Code Geass R2 21, that’s an episode I can get behind.
What was episode 21? I thought it was, in essence, a philosophical debate. Let me explain: (That’s the cue to put your thinking hat on
)
The question was: “Should we eliminate lies and stop the flow of time?”
Group A (Charles, Marianne, C.C., V.V.) wanted to eliminate lies and stop the collective unconsciousness. They suffered a lot during the assassinations for the throne of Britannia and thus resented the world. If they eliminated lies and personas, they could drop their guard and be happy. They interpreted this happiness as Nunnally’s smile.
Group B (Lelouch mainly but also Suzaku, Euphie and Nunnally) Wanted to keep the flow of time because of existential concerns. “Collective Uncounsciousess” can be interpreted as “The Will”, what people want to do with their time and their being. If you can recall C.C. said:
Man is nothing but “Collective unconsciousness” donning a mask.
I interpreted this as “Our bodies and mind are the agents of our will”. Meaning that we are about in the world doing what we want to do. Lying, hurting people, being proud, gaining power and helping other people, are simply representations of this will.
If you remove the will, you have no reason to lie and you will shed your persona. That was Charles’ ambition. Lelouch asked: “At what price?” He said that a world without lies and “The Will” is not worth living in. Lelouch accused Charles and Marianne of being separate from the world, resenting the world. Ultimately, he accused them of abandoning their children to an undesirable ideal. Therefore, he took power in his own hands and ordered the will of the world to continue living. For the will of the world to continue living, Charles and Marianne had to die. C.C. wanted the world to continue so that’s why she didn’t disappear.
(thinking hat can be removed now
)
Now that I dealt with the main point, let’s have a good time with the distractions. “Knight of Zero” Isn’t that cool? Lelouch and Suzaku together against Schneizel. That’s a premise I can get behind. I also hope that Kallen will have a more central role soon, she’s been tossed around for like 10 episodes now.
I think this episode was one of the best because it dealt brilliantly with what was already available. Instead, the last 15 or so episodes kept adding new stuff that never explained anything but instead gave new questions. I can’t find anything bad to say about this episode and it’s been a while since I said that.
What’s the most interesting is that Schneizel apparently has something to tackle Lelouch’s Geass. He’s probably referring to Bismarck’s Geass IMO.
My hope for next episode is that we have a long time to contemplate the new situation. BUT, knowing code geass R2, Schneizel and his posse will be all over the place within 5 minues of the start the next episode. The “All heil Lelouch!” scene is pretty much all we’ll have.
(BTW, lmao at the flying Charles rocket with purple glitter. Who green-lighted that one?)

It was indeed a fantastic episode, the amount of thinking and the combat of the logic definitely compensated for the lack of pew pew mech fights which usually grace our screen. That and the usual Fan Service. I enjoyed the episode yet I yearn more, Why can’t next Sunday come faster!!?
Hey,
I just made a new Code Geass fansite! Check it out!

@ Jonas
Umm… no offence Jonas but your website is ass to be honest with ya.
Great episode.
Unfortunately, I didn’t understand half of what they said in the world of C until the end of the episode.
I don’t know what’s gonna happen from now on.
I mean, Lelouch as an emperor? Is that a good thing?
Anyway, ALL HAIL LELOUCH!
Setsukyies last blog post..Happy Birthday to Hatsune Miku!
Bah, all they did was come up with a purposefully flawed basis for a utopia in order to make reality more appealing. They did the same thing with eternal life.
It frankly pisses me off. This world of lies and death isn’t sufficient, but people like Ichirō and Gorō don’t wish to face up to these facts so they try and make the alternatives (utopia and eternal life) seem undesirable. Try as they might to convice themselves otherwise, the truth remains: Lies kill, and dieing sucks.
weeeeeeeeeeeee!! thank you for the explanation of what happened cuz i was a little confused about what charles wanted and stuff >.> argh this episode was crazy… umm i dont think smght good will come out of luluch being the king but arghhH!! next ep cant wait for it!!
