Another big-breasted warrior lady with an aversion for conflict? You read that right, this unusual culmination of traits is back. The first time I’ve witnessed this was with Grenadier’s lead female, Rushuna. Grenadier, as I remember it, was a fun little anime. It was crazy, pervy and all that stuff but still had a sense of style and maturity hidden underneath it. I’m feeling the same about Koihime Musou.

So far, Koihime Musou is about Kanu and Rin Rin leaving behind their orphan past for something greater. Both their parents were killed by bandits and they still suffer from it. While Kanu is older and tries to appear strong, she is a lot like Rin Rin in a lot of ways.

The first episode sets the stage for the rest of the series, Kanu and Rin Rin meet each other and set off on a journey. That journey is still elusive but Kanu has the reputation of a beautiful bandit-hunter, not unlike Rushuna, as I talked earlier. Those two share a lot of traits and they’re beyond superficial.

What I’m hoping for the rest of the series is that Koihime Musou separates itself from Grenadier. I don’t want it to simply restate the pacifist philosophy of Rushuna. Thankfully, the opening song hints at several other characters that may drown out the ubiquitous similarities.

While I’ve been talking about Kanu, I really dislike Rin Rin, I think she’s simply annoying. I mean, she has the psychological depth of a lawnmower. I think they could have done better than that for a comic relief character.

As for comic relief, I think anime should move beyond the size complexes. Almost every show’s first episode so far this season has been about boob measuring and comparing. I historically liked female characters better for the very reason that the johnson drivel was set aside. Now, the gimmick has come a full circle with women. It’s almost sad, almost sad because it keeps me interested. No matter how unsophisticated it may be, girls feeling each other’s assets up is a sight to behold. A few times even, in slow motion.

MOVING ON! Koihime Musou is a very fan-servicy anime, moves along quick, good production values. I say check it out if you like it. I say it’s better than Sekirei but worse than Strike Wicthes.

BTW, If you ask me who will end up better between Rushuna and Kanu, my money’s on Kanu.
