Summer’s almost here. What anime is Japan brewing for us this time?
Thanks to ANN for the information and descriptions. Now, let’s see what we got here.
Ikkitousen: Great Guardians (Season 3)
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/ency…me.php?id=9439

Genre(s): Action, Comedy, Supernatural

Loosely based on the novel ‘Romance of the three kingdoms’, modern day Japan sees a similar struggle for power between different rival schools with the three strongest being; Kyosho Academy led by Sousou Moutoku, Nanyo Academy by Sonsaku Hakufu and Ryuubi Gentoku from Seito High School. Together these three tousei, each with their own mangatama, fight for the honour of becoming ikki tousen and fulfilling their fated destiny through battle and conquest.
Thoughts:
jp_zer0: Ha! Won’t blog that in a million years. Let alone watch it.
RoseOfMay: Won’t blog it (what would I write about, Kanu’s dynamite body?), but having watched the previous seasons, I am actually gonna watch it =]
Adrian Werner: I did a pretty good job ignoring previous two seasons and I won’t waste all that work now
Telepathy Shoujo Ran
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/ency…me.php?id=9141

Genre(s): Mystery
Number of episodes: 26
Japanese Air Date: June 21st, 2008
Ran is a bright and energetic first-grader in junior high school who possesses supernatual abilities. Together with Midori (her friend who also has supernatural powers) and Rui, the threesome are constantly embroiled in mysterious circumstances. Ran is troubled by her powers because it seems to spark off the ill intentions of people in contact with her. However, with the support of her family and peers, Ran learns to deal with her ‘other’ side and accepts who she is. The threesome also learn how to team up as a whole and solve these mysterious events.
Thoughts:
jp_zer0: Looks interesting, not sure how I feel about TMS Entertainment but I’ll check it out. I would have liked older characters though.
RoseOfMay: Not really my type of show, though it does look pretty interesting. Not sure how I feel about the whole ‘finding out I have supernatural powers’ thing though. I may try it out, however I have a strong feeling it could bore me.
Adrian Werner: No idea what to think of it yet.
Chocolate Underground (OVA)
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/ency…me.php?id=9599

Genre(s): Unknown
Number of episodes: Unknown
Japanese Air Date: Summer, 2008
Adapted from the children’s novel Bootleg by the British author Alex Shearer, story centers on two 13-year-old boys who live in a country that has banned chocolate and mandated fruits and vegetables for daily consumption. The boys discover a stash of cocoa and sugar and decide to run a bootleg chocolate factory, in complete defiance of the government run by the oppressive Good for You Party. Their misadventures eventually sparks a revolution in the country.
Thoughts:
jp_zer0: Sticking it to the man on an issue as important as sweets, count me in!
RoseOfMay: The description sounds awesome and it’s only an OVA so I see absolutely no harm in watching this one; It sounds like alot of fun anyway.
Ultraviolet: Code 044
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/ency…me.php?id=9705

Genre(s): Science Fiction
Number of episodes: 12
Japanese Air Date: July 1st, 2008
*More info to come…
An adaptation of the Hollywood movie UltraViolet (directed and written by Kurt Wimmer), which in turn was a loose adaptation of the movie Gloria (directed and written by John Cassavetes).
Main character “044″ is a female warrior who is genetically engineered with high combat skills and ordered by the government to annihilate a vampire army.
Thoughts:
jp_zer0: This could be a good argument in a debate for anime. I can see it already: “Anime can take even your crappiest movies and make into glorious works of art!”
RoseOfMay: A genetically enhanced female hunting vampires? I’m in. And while I usually don’t favour the urban sci-fi, film noir type anime, I do tend to make exceptions because there is some awesome material hiding within this type of category (e.g. Speedgrapher).
Adrian Werner: The movie sucked like hell, on the other hand do did Witchblade TV series and the anime adaptation was pretty decent. I would have preferred Equilibrium anime though.
Slayers Revolution
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/ency…me.php?id=9500

Genre(s): Adventure, Comedy, Fantasy
Number of episodes: Unknown
Japanese Air Date: July 2nd, 2008
The May issue of Fujimi Shobo’s Dragon Magazine announced the upcoming fourth anime television series in the Slayers fantasy comedy franchise: Slayers Revolution.
The announcement also hinted tongue-in-cheek, but not stated, that the character Xellos will be the main character instead of the popular female lead Lina.
This season’s story takes place at the time when Lina and Gourry start a new journey to look for Gourry’s new sword with the power of magic. It will also include a new character named Pocota who is said to have cast a Dragon Slave using the Sword of Light. Sylpiel and Prince Phil are also reported to appear
Thoughts:
jp_zer0: Not sure how I feel about that. Don’t think I’ll watch it.
RoseOfMay: My most hyped show! I’m a big Slayers fan, but chances are, only Slayers fans would know the meaning and glory of this. To everyone else, I greatly recommend the Slayers series, it’s a classic. As for blogging…I will blog this a thousand times over. I just hope I’m not hyping myself up for a disappointment though. I doubt it’ll be bad however, but time does have a habit of killing classics. Also, it’s rumoured that Lina Inverse isn’t the main character this time around…and I’m fine with this, but the new lead better be good.
jp_zer0: Well since you’re so hysterical I’ll have to get acquainted with this Slayers nonsense.
Adrian Werner: It’s a new Slayers anime, of course I will be wathing it
Antique Bakery (Seiyou Kottou Yougaiten ~Antique~)
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/ency…me.php?id=9501

Genre(s): Comedy, Slice of Life
Number of episodes: 12
Japanese Air Date: July 3rd, 2008
Tachibana, grandson of a rich businessman and newbie in the world of managing; Ono Yuusuke, famous pastry chef and even more infamous “devilish homosexual”; Kanda Eiji, a retired young boxer with a thing for pastries; Kobayakawa Chikage, servant friend of Tachibana and current romantic interest of Ono, who is clumsy yet serious and stoic to a fault (most of the time). Together, these four men maintain a small yet elegant cafe known as “Antique”, where they and all their customers can come together to cherish one of the few but truly important things in life: cake.
Thoughts:
jp_zer0: I saw three men, a cake and the word “devilish homosexual”. That’s all the cues I needed to stop paying attention to it.
RoseOfMay: Err, no. No matter how delicious the cake is, I will not eat it this time around.
jp_zer0: The cake is a lie.
Adrian Werner: Chocolate cake? Arghh… it can not be unseen!
Hidamari Sketch × 365
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/ency…me.php?id=8989

Genre(s): Comedy, Slice of Life
Number of episodes: Unknown
Japanese Air Date: July 3rd, 2008
Yuno has just begun school where she always wanted, Yamabuki High School. She moves out and into an apartment by herself in a complex called Hidamari-so, which is right in front of the school. There, she meets a classmate, Miyako, and a senior student, Hiro. Yuno’s days become hectic as she begins meeting the strange artists that live in her complex. Although she’s not used to her new life style, she begins to actualize her dream while being with these gentle friends.
Thoughts
jp_zer0: Not sure about this one. On one hand the summary looks like crap, on the other, it’s made by SHAFT. Could it turn awesome in the sort of way that Lucky Star was awesome? Like, how the appeal of the show only starts to appear as you watch it? I dunno, we’ll see. I predict a flop.
RoseOfMay: Whether I give this one a try or not depends on how I enjoy the first season (which I’ve been planning to watch for ages), but it looks like something I can enjoy. Doubt I’ll blog it though.
Adrian Werner: SHAFT+Slice of life seems like a weird combo, on the other hand so did “Shaft+eroge adaptation” and yet EF turned out to be outstanding. Plus I enjoyed the first Hidamari Sketch anime a lot (although with SHAFT behind this one it’s sure thing it will be completely different beast), so I’m quite hopeful about this show.
Strike Witches
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/ency…me.php?id=9139

Genre(s): Magic, Military, Science Fiction

The world had received the attack from the existence of the mystery that appeared suddenly. Only girls who have magic can fight against them. Using their bodies as weapons, they fight in the sky, the land, and the sea. This is a story of a group of girls who defend the world…
Thoughts
jp_zer0: “moe anthropomorphizations of military planes.” That’s all I needed to know, I’m in!
RoseOfMay: I love this type of cutesy stuff, so I’ll give it a try. I hope the ‘moe’ factor doesn’t get too excessive though.
Adrian Werner: Moe Saikano?
Birdy the Mighty Decode
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/ency…me.php?id=9287

At first, Tsutomu knows nothing about his situation but soon discovers that his body is starting to take certain actions without his mind ordering it. In times of action, Birdy takes full control of their shared body, transforming it back into her original female form.
Thoughts
jp_zer0: Wow, that summary sure is something. I guess I’ll watch the first episode.
RoseOfMay: This one looks mighty interesting, and the description shows a set up for epic humour =D I’ll be watching this one.
Adrian Werner: I didn’t like the OAV very much.
Natsume Yuujin-chou
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/ency…me.php?id=9419

Genre(s): Supernatural
Number of episodes: Unknown
Japanese Air Date: July 7th, 2008

Containing the names of these spirits, a binding contract was formed between the spirits and the owner of the book. Now, Natsume is determined to free the spirits and dissolve the contracts. With the help of a spirit cat, his days are filled trying to return the names to these spirits.
Thoughts
jp_zer0: Did you see how many times that summary repeated the word “spirits”? Oh lawd, I’m staying away from this one as far as I can. Even though it’s from the makers of two very good shows. The animation was flaky so I’m not sure it redeems itself too much.
RoseOfMay: Lmao, this sounds like Card Captor Sakura. I love CCS, but this show just seems like a lame attempt. I’ll pass.
Adrian Werner: Doesn’t sound too interesting, but Brain’s Base is on the roll, so who knows?!
Mission-E
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/ency…me.php?id=9686

Thoughts
jp_zer0: Looks like shit, fuck it.
RoseOfMay: Hell no.
Adrian Werner: Hell no indeed!
Blade of the Immortal

The only way to lift the curse is to slay 1,000 evil men. So Manji wanders Japan, shedding the blood of the wicked on his quest to finally die.
Thoughts
jp_zer0: looks cheezy but I’ll give it a try.
RoseOfMay: Hell yes. Okay I know it seems abit cliched, but I have a soft spot for the Edo Japan type anime. Plus, I’ve heard great things of the manga and it’s been a while since I’ve seen a recently good anime Samurai flick…which this may be. Plus it’s being brought to us by Bee Train…I’ll check this one out.
Adrian Werner: The manga is a masterpiece, but will they be able to recreate it in animated form? I have my doubts.
Koihime†Musou
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/ency…me.php?id=9498

Genre(s): Romance, Adventure, Fantasy
Number of episodes: 12
Japanese Air Date: July, 2008
A visual novel adaptation? My eroge sense says so!
Koihime†Musō re-imagines the classic Chinese historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms in action/love comedy form with a nearly all-female cast. The game itself featured upwards of 30 female characters.
Thoughts
jp_zer0: Ha! looks like fun, I’ll give it a spin.
RoseOfMay: I like the look of this one. I mean, I like the character designs thus far, I like comedy, I like the story concept, and I like fantasy. Now here’s to hoping they execute it correctly, and hopefully this rendition of ‘Romance Of The Three Kingdoms’ is actually half-decent *coughikkitousencough*

Thoughts
jp_zer0: Adrian has teached me to watch those stinkin fanservice animes. Not only that, but to respect them. I know…
RoseOfMay: *Wipes mouth with cloth* Sorry, I just barfed a little there. This type of anime I cannot stand. The-loser-guy-who-has-something-change-his-life-around-is-first-hated-but-then-liked-by-the-girls-good-guy-yada-yada-reh-reh-reh-gimme-a-damn break-because-I-have-seen-this-a-thousand-frikkin’-times!
jp_zer0: I used to be that guy ^ Albeit less passive-aggressive.
Adrian Werner: The main point of manga is showing half naked ladies, but even that isn’t enough to last long. I never could understand why so many people are going ga-ga about Sekirei
Zero no Tsukaima: Princesses no Rondo (Season 3)

Thoughts
jp_zer0: Wasn’t a fan, don’t think I’ll stick around for an encore.
RoseOfMay: Didn’t bother with first season, but I wanna give it a try. While not exactly original, this kinda anime can be fun to dip into.
Adrian Werner: I’m curious how the hell will they pull it off? Second season has murdered the original novels’ storyline than I have hard time imagining how will they manage to pick the pieces now. I will still watch it though

Thoughts
jp_zer0: Looks really cool, will definitely pick it up.
RoseOfMay: Looks like something to enjoy on an intellectual level, I’ll give it a try since I like law and stuff (yes, before Pheonix Wright).
Adrian Werner: It’s been a long time since I saw a good detective anime, maybe this will deliver.

One day, Yuko wanders into the school library in order to return a book and accidently stumbles upon Haruka’s deepest, darkest secret: she is a diehard fan of anime and manga, in other words, a regular otaku. Promising Haruka to keep this a secret, Yuko becomes her advisor and confidente of some sort and hangs out with her more, though earning some viciously envious glares from his fellow schoolmates. Thoughts
jp_zer0: Isn’t that girl cute.
RoseOfMay: Sounds like Genshiken, but less annoying and more according to my tastes. I’m definitely in!
Adrian Werner: Looks very fun
World Destruction

Genre(s): Unknown
Number of episodes: Unknown
Japanese Air Date: July, 2008
From the creators of Xenogears, it seems. An RPG and anime will be released at the same time. “The story revolves around two main characters named Kyrie and Morute who become a part of an organization called “Destruction of the World.”
Thoughts
jp_zer0: I can’t help but feel this will be the type of dumb anime that always gets a game (even though it’s the other way around this time) Production I.G. can make it happen though.
RoseOfMay: Definitely gonna give this one a try. This stands out from the rest in terms of presentation, I think I’ll like this one but it could go either way. Sounds epic though; and one of my favourite Seiyuu’s, Maaya Sakamoto, is voice acting in this one…a fan’s gotta do what a fan’s gotta do right? I may blog this one depending on how I like it.
Adrian Werner: Adaptation of jRPG? No, thank you. I will pass on this one.

20th Century Boys (Movie)
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/ency…me.php?id=7977

Genre(s): Drama, Mystery, Science Fiction
Theatrical Release: August 30th, 2008
In the summer of 1969, Kenji was an elementary schoolboy. He built a secret base in a vacant lot with his friends Otcho, Maruo, Yoshitsune, Mon-chan, Donkey, Yukiji and Fukubee. One of their secret activities included writing in the ‘Book of Prophecy’. In their ‘Prophecy’, the children fantasized that they had to fight villains who were out to conquer the world, bringing about doomsday.
Years later in 1997, Kenji is the manager of a convenience store. He’s given up his dream to be a rock star and has chosen to live a regular life, looking after his sister’s baby girl Kanna after his sister has disappeared for an undisclosed reason. His boring life is turned upside down one day when his old classmate, Donkey dies mysteriously and then an entire family in the neighborhood disappears.
At the same time, there’s a lot of talk about a religious cult and its mysterious leader, Friend. A strange chain of events follow, which exactly duplicate the events described in the ‘Book of Prophecy.’ Kenji and his former classmates are shocked to learn this horrible truth. If things are happening exactly as described in the ‘Book of Prophecy,’ then Friend’s intention is to fulfill the doomsday prophecy. And Friend is most likely one of the kids they used to play with…
As the events in the ‘Book of Prophecy’ unfold in their lives, Kenji and his former classmates decide to take on the villain.
Time passes and now it’s December 31st, 2000. This is the day described in the ‘Book of Prophecy’ as the day of mankind’s demise.
Thoughts:
jp_zer0: Must watch for me, I loved the manga.
Adrian Werner: I have no idea how they can possibly fit the epic story of 20t Century Boys into couple (is it 2 or 3?) movies
RoseOfMay: I don’t know about this. Since it’s a movie I may give it a try, but the whole ‘prophecy’ idea is way too overdone imo.

I’m not looking forward to any anime this season lols
Me neither, I’ve got mostly passive interest.
i think i’m gonna skip out this summer season… nothing particularly catches my eye. i’m gonna wait 1 or 2 months after the summer season, and if any of the series have good ratings i’ll give it a shot
I couldn’t understand some parts of this article , but I guess I just need to check some more resources regarding this, because it sounds interesting.
lol, i was looking for this list so thanks! hmm… i like some of the manga for the above anime so I’m kinda looking forward to the release XD. Thanks for this article!
