Baccano- 14 (DVD only episode)

We interrupt our regular broadcast of anime blogging to bring you news from the world where men are manly, women are deadly, sane people are silent minority, where everything is like it should be: bigger than life.
A world where demons, alchemists, homunculus and immortals run wild and yet the biggest, most scary monsters are 100% human
It’s time for stupid commotion
It’s time for
BACCANO!
Let me start from saying that to me Baccano was by far the greatest anime of 2007 and overall one of best animation series I ever had pleasure of watching. It was crazy, over the top, delightfully pulpish, with huge cast of wacky characters, who I’ve fallen in love with after just few minutes. It managed to have incredibly funny comedy scenes, thrilling action sequences and at the same time when it tried to be scary and grim it really pulled it off perfectly.
Baccano only had one big problem: with mere 13 episodes it was simply too damn short. Fortunately the wait is finally over and the first of three DVD-only episodes is out.(well, for us lowly life forms that need subs to understand what’s going on
)
Episode 14 starts with the pair our beloved nut heads: Isaac and Miria
Domino= serious business!
They’ve built domino pattern they would make V from V for Vendetta green from jeleausy!
And they even got everyone to help them!
What a great way to start episode, right Mr Isaac and ms Miria?
Ni !
That’s just the appetizer though, the main dish is the introduction to yet another nut job to Baccano universe: Graham Spectre.
Look at those crazy eyes, he fits this anime perfectly!
His weapon of choice is huge ass wrench.
He kicks-ass with it, enough to dismantle a whole car…
before it hits the ground.
Got I love how ridiculous Baccano can get
Yep, our boss is definitly mental!
Graham is another theatrically crazy wacko in this series, he has melodramatic monologues, over the top abilities and is well, pretty much insane. It’s not the first character like that in Baccano and yet he’s completely different from both Ladd and Clare.
Still, that city is too small for multiple egos of this sizes, so he’s in reality Ladd’s subordinate and big fan of his (aren’t we all?
). He was waiting for Ladd’s arrival, but his hopes were crushed as Rail Tracer owned Ladd badly in the train incident. This makes Graham sad, in his own words “He can’t forgive the one who put him in such unforgiving mood “:D
We are then threated to a completely bad-ass flashback sequence on how they’ve met. It all starts with Ladd being sent by his uncle to have a little “talk” with some insubordinate employees.
““Ladd, go have a talk with them”
translates to
“Ladd, go and massacre them till you’re satisfied”
Ladd of course follows the uncle’s orders to the letter
He’s letting him think up good last words. See? Ladd can be a kind person if he wants to!
Before he can finish Graham appears!
Yes, he indeed did catch Ladd’s bullet just like that!
Manly glaring!
WHOA!
Ladd owns too.
Ladd Klein > Errol Flynn
Final showdown!
Fool! This is a mere flesh wound for Ladd! Graham looses!
Then they do some psycho bonding.
But something bothers our lovely Ladd
Hm… I feel like I forgot something important…
Och!
I remember now!
BUAHAHAHA!!!
Damn, am I a bad person? Because I was laughing along with Ladd and Graham in this scene
Baccano’s action scenes are always amazing, they don’t use godly animation, just good direction, sense of style and over the top choreography. And they always rock like hell, episode 14 isn’t an exception. It’s another great psycho vs psycho fight. Seeing them not only fight physically, but throw their melodramatic nonsense monologues at each other is just so much fun
The last section of this episode deals with Huey Laforet and what a shocker: there’s something wrong with his head too ![]()
He seems to have a pretty weird relation with his daughter and she is obviously also screwed up, because after her Daddy say he will let her know a secret she can never reveal to anyone or even use for her own sake she asks him to take away her voice to help with that. Yep, that’s how Chane lost her voice. I really liked how they never showed her lips when she was talking. We’ve only seen her mute so far in previous episodes and it was a great little touch that makes it creppy.
I didn’t realize before just how much I’ve missed Baccano, as you already know I absolutely love this series and this episode was a pure joy for me to watch. If you’ve seen Baccano, you need to see this. And if you haven’t seen Baccano yet… what the hell are you doing?! Get it! NOW!
rating: 9.3/10
great quotes from this episode:
“Happines comes just like misfortune does, I’m sure she won’t be able to run away from it”
Graham:It’s a wonderfully fun and sad talk, right?
His minion: How and where is it sad?
Graham Well be having fun and they will be sad, right?
