Code Geass R2- 01

It continues at last!
Opening
Nothing special. I guess it is somewhat impressive that it’s quite different from the usual Orange Range style, but that’s the only thing about this song that’s worth mentioning. The visuals in opening are great though.

Ending is much better. It’s still not anything on the level of OP music from first series, but at least it’s a huge step up compared to the mediocre opening.
Short summary: A year has passed since Zero’s plan failed. Most members of the Order of Black Knights has been either captured or killed. Few remain in hiding and the whole Japanese nation is suffering consequences of Zero’s failure.
Lelouch having lost his power and memory is living a peaceful, but boring life with his younger brother.
C.C however isn’t going to let him continue like that. She and last of Black Knights execute a plan to capture Lelouch and return him to his old self
Impressions: We’ve waited almost a year for this, which considering how season 1 ended was just cruel (well, it is Sunrise, they were always cruel to their characters, why not treat viewers the same? It helps is bond with 2d animated people ^_^).
This episode starts with the amnesia cliche. Fortunately here it’s not that bad. We learn what happened with other characters and how the current situation in Area 11 looks like, which makes the episode interesting even without Zero.
I must confess I was cheering like a little kid when Lelouch regained his power and slaughtered Britannia’s soldiers in a scene that mirrors the beginning of the first series. Geass never was among my favorite shows of all time, but damn me if it isn’t exciting as hell.
It did however look a bit strange when Lelouch was doing the typical Zero theatrical monologue. I guess he needs his costume to pull off a performance like that ^_^
This episode still leaves awful lot of unanswered questions though: where did Lelouch’s little brother come from (and is he a real brother or a fake one)? What exactly happened a year ago? Why is Suzaku so close to Emperor, did he reveal Zero’s identity to him (doubtful, Lelouch would probably already be imprisoned if that was the case unless they put fake memories into him solely to lure C.C out)?
It’s merely a first episode though so this is natural.
The visuals are absolutely gorgeous with fluid animation and great detail on everything. HD really does wonders for this show.
I did have to get used to Lelouch’s serious voice once again though. I didn’t remember it well from first season and multiple re-watchings of Spice and Wolf (where Lelouch’s voice actor; Jun Fukuyama was voicing Lawrence) made me associate his voice with cheerful and kind personality.
Overall a strong start for one of the most anticipated spring shows.
